This may have been posted here before but I just got hold of it and printed it out to keep and thought I would share it around as I had not seen some of it before. Hope someone finds it useful... :-) Ford tractors The 8N was made from 48-52. The NAA was a slightly larger and more powerful tractor made in 53 and 54. The 600 was made from 55 through 58, it is basically a refined NAA, but an LP option was available. In 58 through 62 they were called the 601s, with minor refinements, plus the availability of diesel engines and the Select-O-Speed transmission. In 63 and later they were known as the 2000, but there was also a three-cylinder line of 2000s which were different. The 800 was introduced at the same time as the 600. It had a larger engine and rear-end along with some different sheet metal. This progressed into the 801, then into the four cylinder version of the 4000. The 501 was a one-row, 8" offset version of the 601. The 700 and 701 were high clearance row-crop versions of the 600 and 601. The 900 and 901 had the same relationship to the 800 and 801. The 1801 was an industrial version of the 801. Similar relationships exist with the 2000 and 4000 series. The gas and LP models were 6v positive ground. The diesels were all 12v negative ground. To summarize, the options indicated by the model numbers: 5xx one-row 8" offset 134 cid gas or LP, 144 cid diesel 6xx four wheel 134 cid gas or LP, 144 cid diesel 7xx high clearance row-crop 134 cid gas or LP, 144 cid diesel 8xx four wheel 172 cid gas, LP or diesel 9xx high clearance row-crop 172 cid gas, LP or diesel 18xx four wheel industrial 172 cid gas, LP or diesel x1x Select-O-Speed w/o PTO x2x 4-speed, w/o PTO w/o 3ph x3x 4-speed, w/o PTO x4x 4-speed x5x 5-speed w/PTO x6x 5-speed w/live PTO (2-stage clutch pedal) x7x Select-O-Speed w/PTO x8x Select-O-Speed w/PTO 540 & 1000RPM, independent or ground drive xx0 1955-1958 xx1 1958-1962 xxx-1 tricycle xxx-4 high clearance, four wheel xxx-D diesel xxx-L LP xxx-37 Reversing transmission xxx-21 Combination transmission (i.e. Sherman) The reversion transmission was available for the industrial tractor and made it possible to reverse the power flow on four speed transmissions.
The Combination transmission was also available with the four speed transmission to add a Step-Up and Step-Down capability resulting in twelve forward and three reverse speeds. Both of these were avaiable from the factory or as a field installation. This information is reported to be from an I&T manual. I pulled it from the ATIS e-mail list Francis Robinson 6-18-1999
