Stay away from the CO2 cylinder guns. I haven't bought one in a long time, but my son used to have a Crossman that was a gem.
I'd give serious thought to Old's suggestion of a bolt action 22 and a few boxes of shorts.
If you really want to make them smile, get a 22 and a .410 shotgun for them!
