"I wish someone would explain to me how just replacin' a clogged air filter would absolutely stop an engine from blowin' blue smoke out the exhaust" When the piston goes down on the intake stroke it has got to pull something from somewhere and if it isn't air through the intake it will be oil through the valve guides or oil past the rings or antifreeze from the head gasket I suppose.
