I should have mentioned that the Mopar slant 4 has an overhead cam with a rubber timing belt between the crank and the camshaft. The AMC four cylinder has an overhead valve engine with pushrods. No outside timing belt. The Chrysler corporate 4 was "quietly dropped" in favor of the "Magnum 4". So you should be able to tell pretty easily what you have. Chrysler also used a Mitsubishi 4, but not in Dakotas. They also used a Volkswagen 4 in the earlier Omnis. Then for a while, they used a Peugeot 4 cylinder as an option. Finally, they had a "Maserati" engine. Just a double overhead cam on the same slant 4. Somewhere in there, they also sold them with turbochargers. I still own a 1982 Rampage, and its about the same as an Omni. Could fit different engines into it. I'm thinking of installing a diesel with rear wheel drive. Just thinking... Chrysler even sold a kit to convert them to rearwheel drive for racing purposes.
