Allis Chalmers B engine

Saturday while pulling a trailer with fire wood with our AC-B my brother and I noticed a rapping or knocking in what turned out to be the engine. Within a hundred yards of going along in third it went from "do I hear anything or is it just some odd rattle" to "I don't want to run this engine anymore until I fix whatever is making that noise". I stopped the tractor, my brother got off the trailer and went around to the side of the engine and told me the sound is comming from the engine, it was loud enough that I shut it off at this point and we towed it back to the house. The long and short of it is that we ended up with the engine on an engine stand and the pan off, could find nothing by looking and feeling for play. Next day we started pulling and checking rods, found one that the upper bearing shell was just comming apart. This engine has been a good runner, strong, with good oil pressure, which we keep clean oil in. There were no knocks until this failure. Before we owned it the original owner had it since new, using it for mostly snowplowing. From the look of the engine and measurements of crank, it had never been worked on since new, probably around 1950. Anybody know what might make a bearing fail like this? On the front half of the upper shell the metal surface was mostly gone, on the rear half it had cracks running back and a few pieces of the surface were gone. I am glad I shut it down when I did. Crank looked good, rod surfaces miked out within new except for the bad one which was .0008" out of round. Mains were round but .004" worn. Will be grinding crank and installing new bearings.
