Sort of the same with live PTO and hydraulics.
Take a Ford 8N with a bush hog and get into tough stuff. To keep the engine running one pushes in the clutch which stops the bush hog dead and binds it up. To free it, one has to take the trans out of gear and let the clutch out so the hydraulics work and will pick up the bush hog and move to a lesser resistance.
