Actually, an engine operating hour is considered 100,000 crankshaft revolutions. Low load, low RPM operation doesn't stress components like pistons, rings, rods, & bearings near as hard as full load operation at rated RPM. So shifting UP and throttling down does save wear & tear and operating hours.
Back in the late 50's & early 60's Dad drove semi's, and the one GMC He spent a LOT of time in had speedometer & tach, which was rare for that time period. Tach also had an hour meter and the comment about 100,000 rev. was on the face of the tach.
