I had 86 ranger 2.9 acted exactly like that. Miss and sputter at speed but ok at idle. Dealer replaced the o2 sensor and some wiring. After three visits, $500 and no fix I gave up on the dealer. I decided to start changing sensors myself. The problem was the air temp sensor in the intake. On mine it's located on the right side(passenger) of the intake manifold. Fixed it right up for about $20. Glad it was the first one I changed.
