If I'm visualizing right, that sounds like a slick way to use that critter. My present log splitter can be used horizontal(too high off the ground) and vertical(just about right height). My reason for thinking the gearbox might help was for speed. I guess if a guy wasn't trying to make a living at producing split firewood, it wouldn't make that much difference. I have to take a good 'halfstep' back to reach my hydro/power lever on my splitter so there is ZERO chance of getting split myself unless I was using a helper. I think I'll just stick with what I am used to.
