My neighbor has an 855 and it is identical to my 849 in every way except for the tensioner system and everything is built about 30% heavier on his machine.

I've never understood NH's numbering system either. For instance, the later numbered 850 and 851 are still the old style 'floor chain' type. Go figure.

Just a guess, but 'spose NH quit the chainers because they weren't selling any parts? :>)
