46 case vac keeps stalling out on me.

heres the problem.... i got it to run today and she ran real good for a short time and then started sputtering and stalling so i pulled the carb and tore it down and it was filled with sludge. i gave it a good cleaning in every nook and cranny pulled EVERYTHING apart even the jets and sprayed with carb cleaner and blew it out with compressed air. put it all back together and gave both the upper and lower adjustment screws a base setting of all the way in then 3 full turns out. it started right up but it keeps stalling after a couple of minutes. i know this is a simple carb and the task is simple but i just cant seem to find a happy medium to keep it going. also this is gonna sound like im an idot but what is the importance of the oil wash air filter and what oil should be in there ? it is empty right now.dont yell at me im young and dont know any better. thanks in advance for any helpful info.
