Cattle producers in NE

Allan and other NE cowmen: Got my newsletter from the NC and SC cattlemen"s association. There was a report of a trip West by some members of the NC Angus Association. Some excerpts: Allan, they went to Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. Said the funniest event was a wild horse race in which a team of 3 including 1 rider had to saddle a wild horse and ride it one time around the track in the right direction. Don"t think your wife will be interested in that next year. I hope she is getting better and is able to supervise you.
They went to Gering, NE and toured Snake Creek Ranch. (www. snakecreekangus.com) The owner tries to sell commercial cows bred with 3rd calf at about $1500. He runs 2000 pair and also has a feed lot of 18000 head capacity. Pasture is irrigated. Snake Creek is on Western edge of Ogallala aquifer. A moratorium has been placed on drilling new irrigation wells in western NE because of cincerns about water level.
Dry land there sells for $250 to $300 an acre and irrigated for $1000 to $1500 depending on water source. Wells there 300 feet deep and average 1100 to 1400 feet per minute. Cost to install a diesel center pivot about $600 per acre. A pivot will last 20 years and is depreciated over 7 years. Hope this is interesting to some. KEH
