And not only that, myself and a lot of others get their retirements paid out of insurance companies' investments. When there is a stock market collapse like in 2001, or if they fear one in the near future, they're going to be pretty desperate to raise the cash flow they need to pay out to their annuity holders, etc. That includes putting pressure on companies they invest in to raise profits by buying offshore. If you default on annuities, your reputation is shot, and who knows who all will go down the drain with you. So you could kick up inflation to save your political neck, but then what happens to everyone who thought they had some savings put away? Only social security is indexed for inflation.
