Like you said its supply and demand. Price went up and demand dropped, thats why the inventories are steady. If the government went to price controls like it did under Nixon the inventories would be wiped out and instead of high gas prices with no lines you'd have slightly lower prices but only able to buy fuel every other day of the week or so.
