Not true. Drive elements within the TA unit must be healthy for the tractor to drive in Direct whether it is an older mechanical TA or a newer style hydraulic TA. It is much more common for a TA to fail on the low side, but certainly not unheard of for it to fail on the direct drive side, especially as related to multiple control valve problems on hydraulic TA's.
