Sounds like a big cat to me. Dogs usually will bite all over the prey, ripping ears, legs, etc. If you´ve ever seen a herd of sheep or goats that a pack of dogs got into, you would know what I mean.
That horse in the newspaper photo would have had bites all over if was a dog(s).
