Would 2 6 volt batteries also not charge from 6 volt generator if wired in series? Since as you mention that would give you 12 volts? Unless he means also changing the alternator to 12 volts. But then I might as well just buy a 12 volt battery rather than another 6 volt?
As far as I know it's not good to match different batteries anyway - old one and new one even if they are identical, since a new battery will not carge at the same rate as an old one.
