You want the coils with the spring clips that hold the plug wires made with the metal band crimped on the end of the wires.
The coils with a sharp post that is supposed to spear into the end of the plug wires are a distant 2nd choice.
Nice to see somebody wanting to doing a cranking engine ignition system properly. A cobble job with four ordinary six volt coils baler wired onto the side of the engine looks like cr*p. Burns the points out fast too.
Plugs are Auto-Lite 216 non resistor. Running voltage to the coils should be boosted to 5.0V with the new versions.
F.I.T along with Clooney perfected the anti coil burn out protection circuit. A must have. Numerous posting for it when searching in the JD area of this site.
A proper ignition system. And a fuel system that isn't gummed up, filled with dirt,a kinked hose and a properly set rebuilt carb. Will eliminate 95% of cranking engine complaints.
Using the decompression lever at start-up also reduces wear and tear to the cranking engine, clutch, ring gear. pinion gear and even the main engine.
I've seen dingalings who didn't use the decompression lever except to shut off the diesel. They didn't know how to shut off the fuel flow.
