No, the hydro will not work running backwards. The "charge pump" will not work, and the unit will die from lack of lubrication, within a minute or two. On SOME hydros, the body of the charge pump can be turned 1/4 turn, and it will operate in the reverse direction, but I don't think that can be done with yours, although Sundstrand probably did make an alternate charge pump for reverse rotation operation. If you were to obtain a charge pump for the opposite rotation, the hydro SHOULD work, although operation of the speed-forward/reverse conrol would, I believe, be opposite of original. I suggest turning the engine around so driveshaft rotation is correct.
