Starter flywheel housing borken

Has anyone ever had the housing that comes up around the flywheel on a starter break in two. Had one break friday makes a very very bad sound I shut it down fast. What would make this happen? Vibration? Is it time to call "New Orleans" just "Orleans"?After Katrina there's not much new about it.
