Quality of springs, etc. these days ....

Ever notice that the quality of a lot of hardware stuff you might pick up to replace something on your old tractor is of very poor quality? I bought a new clutch control rod return spring this past summer. It was a compression spring about 3" in length. I tested it in my bench vise before installing it by squeezing it together carefully. After the squeeze, it ended up being only about 2 1/2" long. There are a lot of other examples of similar things that I've encountered over the years. The stuff at hardware stores often isn't of good enough quality, and of course it's cheap to buy which probably explains it. I have found the best hardware comes from something that you've taken apart and salvaged like springs or fasteners etc. from a manufactured item like a dishwasher or other article.
