I think what happened in N.O. is no different than what happened in Atlanta after Sherman and Hood marched away from it in differnt directions. The same thing happend in Columbia S.C. (again after Sherman) and Richmond after Lee evacuated and before the union army reestablished order. Human nature good and bad resurfaces quickly in the sudden absence of law and order.
