I did a lot of research on this the last time around, about doing your own on the farm. Forget it for a big reason. You can get it up to good drinking proof and higher very easy. But: to get it that last bit without water so as to burn it for fuel is very hard. You need some thing like 98-99 percent or 180 proof. What I am trying to say is that last percent or two of water is hard and dangerous to remove.
Mother Earth News had the simplest still. Like a 4 to 6 inch copper pipe 12 to 16 foot tall. Filled with old bolts and nuts for fuel grade or marbles for drinking stuff.
