St. Johns Michigan. I was given a tour of a mint operation there. It is grown on muck ground. I think it is peppermint. It has been grown there for many years. It is harvested by chopping, the choppper putting the crop into a special wagon. The wagon is taken to the still, a hood put over it, and a steam pipe fitted on the bottom. A 200 hp boiler pumps steam into it, the hood collects the vapor off the top, and runs it thru a condenser. The vapor condenses, and the peppermint oil is skimmed off the top. A years crop for 200 acres might be a couple of barrels. The oil is so potent that a drop on your tounge will burn it. I was told that a mint wagon, fully loaeded, weighed 17 tons. If it started raining, you had to get off the field immediately, because the muck ground would turn liquid very fast. Big 4 wheelers are used to pull the chopper and wagons. St. Johns has a mint festival every year, and a local bank has a special vault for mint storage. A barrel is worth $$$$$. Easy.
