Generator damaged?

Can you damage a generator by using a 200 amp jump starter on the battery? The old 60's generator always worked properly til today after I used a 200 amp starter-charger to start the tractor (which had set for two months). Ran it an hour, needle straight up; turn on lights it would show discharge; but needle never showed pos. Did I screw up again?
