Your battery maybe over full. Or made to run with a generator at 13.4 to 13.8V depending on temperature.
Alternators are made for automotive batteries designed for 13.8 to 14.2V.
If the battery - is connected to chassis. The coil - goes to the points.
What ohm rating is the coil primaries?
