The reason this is attractive is a power plant can convert unrefined or minimally refined (ie low energy input) fuels at high efficiency. They can get almost twice the energy out of fuel as a car can. So even with the losses in transmission you end up with a net reduction in fuel use.

If power plants use gasoline and were as inefficent as cars our rates would be double or triple what they are.

Any have the figures on how many equivalent barrels of oil it take to refine crude into gas? It can be high!
