Farmall H transmission counter shaft

I am in the process of replacing the drive shaft and constant mesh gear in my 1942 Farmall H. When assembling the counter shaft the service manual (page 36) states to be sure the spacer between the front gear and bearing is in place before driving the shaft into the front bearing. There was no spacer when I disassembled the counter shaft and the parts book does not show one either. Can anyone tell me what the service manual is referring to?
