Undercarriage replacement cost is extremely expensive on crawlers. At the time, even the smallest Caterpillar and IH crawlers had more drawbar pull than the largest wheel tractors, I have seen pictures of a Cat D2 pulling a 4 bottom plow, whereas that would have been a good load for a John Deere 730. The cat could also have been used for deep tillage as most vegetable farming requires, with the large drawbar pull required and available with a tracked machine. Stability on slopes was a factor in favour of crawlers before duals and triples were popular.
Also, a crawler needs to be loaded before transport on paved roads, vs. rubber tired machines. Now high horsepower wheel tractors have sufficent drawbar pull plus the advantage of higher working speeds in the field, plus significantly lower purchase price.
