By an unhappy coincidence I have the cover off mine right now. It looks like you could pull the shaft out the front to replace the bearing. It might be as much trouble as taking the cover off though, by the time you get that bolt off the end and line things up again. Doesn't seem like it would hurt anything to try, worst case you'll end up taking the top off anyway.
