Moldboard plowing is definately not a thing of the past in this area. Most of the processing vegetable crops grown here require plowing to minimize disease (in double cropped plantings) and eliminate the trash pickup problems asscoiated with the mechanical harvest of lima beans, peas, and pickling cumcumbers. This area has a high percentage of vegetable crops grown due to the sandy soils, proximity to east coast markets and the wide spread use of center pivot irrigation. Some of the vegetable growers I work with are moldboard plowing 6-8 thousand acres per season.
