My experience indicates an engine needs quite a bit more advance for part throttle operation than for full throttle operation to be economic. One time I broke the distributor on a Pinto wagon and the only thing I could get delivered was a Mallory pure centrifugal advance. The engine ran fine at full throttle and ran smoothly at part throttle but with poorer economy. Enough poorer that I paid Ford for a new distributor with the original vacuum and centrifugal advance. No tractors engines seem to ever had used vacuum advance in addition to centrifugal advance, hence the economy was not as good as it could have been and the economy of diesels took over. Gerald
