My mom grew up in Oklahoma, so I happen to know this one. Oklahoma was originally set aside for indian reservations. In 1889, it was opened up for homesteading, and there was a "land run" where settlers literally raced across the state to stake out the best land. Quite a few of the homesteaders snuck across the starting line early so they could grab the best ground. These cheaters were called "sooners" because they got to the best land sooner than everyone else. The practice was so widespread that eventually all Okies were called "Sooners".
