I've seen this type of trouble before with single pets- one of a flock/herd critter tries to bond with whatever other critter is around. Dogs bonding to human seems acceptable- a single pig in the house gets messy. Horse people sometimes get a companion goat for the horse when they can't work with the horse a lot. Single turkey hen pet used to half nest with Pekin drake. Get a pair at a time and have less hassle. Good luck with the duck hunt. RN
