Fan Shaft

I am in the process of restoring a 1948 John Deere A. As long as i've had it the fanshaft leaked oil on the end closest to the mag. So I started tearing it down to paint and figured I would fix the oil leak. So when I got the whole fanshaft assambley out Inoticed someone welded the gear on the end. And I can't fix the part that is leaking with that gera on. So I was looking it over and noticed all the casting numbers started with "B" not "A" like the rest on the tractor. My question is were theese parts interchangeable or is that the reason for the new gear welded on? Any help?
