We use to burn a lot of cane fields around here also.

Back in the early 90's LSU came up with a new cane variety that not only has a heavier sugar production but is better suited to combine harvesting systems which do not require burning of the field before harvest. They still burn the field after the harvest but it is more like a small grass fire instead of a forest fire.
