I had 4.3 GMC Jimmy, same engine. Kept it 12 years without ever a knock or problems. Sold it to a neighbor, to whom I had explained in detail to use only Mobil One and to change it every 3000 miles. He came by the house one day to complain that it had developed a knocking until warmed up. He had switched to regular oil. Sure enough, when he switched back to the Mobil One, all knocking was stopped. I am told that without synthetic oil some of the 4.3 engines will have "piston slap" until warmed up.
