I drive a '96 S10 PU to work every day. It has 170K on it and uses almost no oil between changes. The key to engine life is a strict maintance schedual. Oil changed every 3K miles, religously. This is my 2nd 4.3. The 1st went to over 150k. The guy who drives it now says it will make 250K. Don't know the problem with your mother's, but I would get it to a reputable mechanic yesterday.
