Newman, Newman, Newman. Granted, a lot of incidents involving "SUVs" are operator caused, and perhaps even most. However, don't be so quick to judge the motives of owning a "SUV".

I recently dated a lady that owns and drives a "SUV", although their is nothing sporty about it. Their were two reasons that she has and drives her non-sporty '98 Tahoe. First, for the safety of her two children, whom she doesn't want to entrust to "a cheap vehical", as you put it. She would prefer to have a heavier, beefer vehical to get her and her children home safely than a Yugo, Neon, and ... and whatever else type of "environmentally friendlier" low dollar tin coffin on wheels others feel comfortable driving, do drive, and could offord to do so, so she did. Her choice. That to me is admirable, and very thoughtful on her behalf. Secondly, she has a horse that she moves from place to place on occasion, such as the 4H fair that just ended today for my county, Elkhart. She probably would be better served having a 1 ton dually with a larger trailer that includes a tack room and sleeping quarters, but she does what she can offord, and no Yugo, Neon, ... is gonna pull even the smaller trailer that she currntly has, and certainly not safely if one of them can.

Sometime back, a good friend here to us all, TXGRN, although at the time, TXBLU, gave me a good reminder, kind of a wakeup chop across my chops, when I slammed someone for paying something like $17K for a 3010. He basically countered with "it's their money, they earned it, let 'em use thier money as they see fit". Mark was 100% correct, and I was rightfully humbled, as I deserved it.

And one last thing. I remember watching her put on makeup the night before a date, or after showering in the morning, and it was well worth the price of admission, that I can guarantee anyone.
