656 question for Allen and other red guys

Hello,
Buddy of mine has a 656 deisel. He bought it last summer from a retired farmer who was known for good maintenance. He was cutting hay with it, and as he neared the end of a round, the pto quit.
He also has no hydraulics. He told me it was all of a sudden, no noise, vibrations or anything. I haven't been out to look at it, check fluids or anything yet.
He's pretty unmechanical so questioning him a whole lot isn't much help.
I don't know if this is a common problem, or if you've had any experiance with this. What should I be looking for when I check this thing out?? Any advice, or experiance is appreciated.
