Anthony, Those two switches on the firewall are what control your lockup on the converter. It is an engine vacumn over electrical solenoid arrangement. The banging into gear is most likely slop in the drive train, as that transmission uses no vacumn and is controlled via a throttle cable working against governor pressure. Allan
