Well if its the real turpentine not paint thinner, it seems to eat rust, and with the tranny fluid it seems to pull the tranny fluid down where it might not get. As far as a residue it doesn't seem to leave any and what is left in the cylinders just seems to burn out when and if you get the engine started. The turpentine trick was told to me by a guy that had a tractor dealer ship in a near by town and he said he was told the trick by a man in his 90s and that was years ago. Sadly both of them have since passed away.
