Number of head bolts & oil pan shape are the easiest ways without tearing the engine apart. K-161/181 7 & 8 Hp engines have 6 or 7 head bolts.... not positive but about two too few to keep from blowing head gaskets. There were two different bores even from the factory, only difference between the two was 1/4" longer stroke on the K-181. K-161 in the 1961 to 1963 Cub Cadets had oil bath air cleaners. And the K-181 had a bit wider air filter than the K-161 if the housing hasn't been changed. K-241 (10 HP) K-301 (12 hp) K-321 (14 hp) all had nine head bolts. Oil pan on K-241 was flat on the bottom, all the others have a dropped sump for rod clearance due to the longer stroke. Flywheel and blower housing on the K-321 is HUGE compared to the K-301, And K-361 has ten head bolts.
