John Deere 318

Hi, need some help here. I just put a new battery in my 86' tractor, It has a Onan motor. I also replaced the starter relay. The thing is the low battery light came on shortly after I installed it. I have checked all the connections and it ran for a little bit, but now has a dead battery. Any ideas? Is it a stator and if so, is that behind the flywheel(meaning I have to yank the motor out again? Also, the mowing deck will not engage. I checked all the connections and the light indicator does come on saying it is engaged, but doesn't kick into action. It did until the battery died. It also trys to stall when you turn on the lights and engage the mower. Is this related? Thanks a bunch. Much appreciated
