It sounds like you have a shift valve or another spool hung with a piece of debris. You may be getting one clutch engaged but not the other. Most gears need a clutch and/or a planatary brake engaged to allow power to flow through the transmission. There are 4 shift valves along with a pressure regulating valve. You will need a tech manual and some gauges to troubleshoot.
