54 SMTA Propane power steering fluid type filter ?

I own a 54 SMTA Propane that has char/lynn factory power steering. I am restoring this tractor since it is one of 218 factory propanes and while changing a rough looking hose on the power steering, I took off the lid on the power steering reservoyer and it looks to me as though there needs to be a filter in there. Does anyone know for sure?? If so, where can I find one?? The local IH dealer has no books on the char/lynn system. Also, does this need to have hy-tran for the fluid?? Whats in there seems to be thicker than power steering fluid, and it doesn't smell like engine oil. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
