Howdy folks,

Well, after several months and a good deal of money invested in my local JD dealership, it"s back to the drawing board on my JD R. Back in April when disking this year"s corn field I ran through 13 quarts of oil in around 5-6 hours and had a persistent drip of water from the bottom of the block. So, I up and decided it was time to bring it in and do an overhaul...new rings, gaskets, and try to fix the leak in the block. Tore it all down and dad and I worked on the block. The plan was to make plates for each side(under each cylinder in other words). We cut "em, drilled "em, made gaskets for them, drilled and tapped holes in the block for the plates" screws and sealed them up. Got all the gaskets after a lot of waiting and money spent and got the rings. Finished up with all the assembly yesterday evening. Finally, I could hear my R run again. Started the pony and got its carb adjusted to where it ran smooth. Now the big moment....pulled the decompression lever and pony clutch.......What in the world??? Suddenly, before even starting the big motor, there is water pumping out of the exhaust manifold. I go ahead and crank the big motor over and get it started. It runs on just one cylinder and is really puttin out the diesel smoke. I look under the tractor and water is pouring out around the new patch plates on the block. So here"s where I stand and I ask for your assistance in figuring out what to do. I need to find either a way to fix the leak in the block or find a used one somewhere. I need to figure out why the tractor won"t run on both cylinders (I haven"t yet checked the injectors so that is a possibility). And I need to know why on earth there is water pumping out of the top of the exhaust manifold. I put in a new head gasket and the water pumped before the big motor had even ran so it can"t be a blown head gasket (unless it was junk to start with). All right boys, I need your help here. Thanks in advance. God bless.

Today's Featured Article - New Hitches For Your Old Tractor - by Chris Pratt. For this article, we are going to make the irrational and unlikely assumption that you purchased an older tractor that is in tip top shape and needs no immediate repairs other than an oil change and a good bath. To the newcomer planning to restore the machine, this means you have everything you need for the moment (something to sit in the shop and just look at for awhile while you read the books). To the newcomer that wants to get out and use the machine for field work, you may have already hit a major roadblock. That is the dreaded "proprietary hitch". With the exception of the ...
