In addition to what Bob says, The historical convention was #1 at timing end of engine, rods marked on cam shaft side(timing side), pistons marked at front, valves pop-punched from one to however-many. Things were simple in the old days. Everyone new that, "cos engines didn"t last long between decokes and rebuilds as fuel and lubrication was not as refined as today, amongst other factors. For example I have a service book for a 1940-1950 car which recommends decarbonising the engine every 4000 miles, or less as required. Regards, RAB
