Yes the pre cleaners work, they seperate majority of the dirt,the large heavy particles out of the air stream before it gets to the main filter. On machines that run under very dirty conditions like a combine,I have seen the need to clean or replace the main filter go from once per day to once per season when a pre cleaner was installed. most modern pre cleaners have a venturi pump system built into the machines exhaust system so seperated dirt is sucked out of the pre cleaner and blown out the machines exhaust pipe. This eliminates the need to clean the jar or other container on the pre cleaner.
