Diesel Engine RPM Measurement

I have a Ford 201 Diesel Engine in my Ford 550 Backhoe. The one belt connects the crankshaft pulley to the water pump pulley to the alternator pulley. Am I correct in assuming that I could measure engine speed with an optical tachometer off either the radiator fan, or the alternator pulley, or the water pump pulley, or even the hydraulic pump shaft? Theoretically, should all measurements be approximately the same RPM?
